If you like to save money then you need to think about the energy consumption in your house. When the temperatures get really hot during the summer there is nothing better than being able to escape to a cool comfortable home.

Since your HVAC system is responsible for approximately half your energy bill, running your air conditioner can end up costing you more if you don’t improve the efficiency of your system. The following are tips that can help you increase the efficiency of your air conditioner while decreasing your energy consumption.

Change your air filter
A dirty air filter can reduce the efficiency of your air conditioner. According to the Department of Energy, replacing a dirty filter with a clean one can reduce energy consumption by as much as 15%.

Fix air leaks
Leaks in your ductwork can reduce airflow up to 30%. As stated by the Department of Energy,  sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as  20 percent  — and sometimes much more.

Insulate your ducts
Ducts are usually located in the attic or crawl spaces which can get very hot. Insulating your ducts helps keep the airflow cool so your system won’t have to work as hard.

Keep the A/C outside unit unobstructed
Your air conditioner’s outside unit (the compressor and condenser) works best when there is at least 24 inches of clear space in all directions. Remove any branches, shrubs, tall grass, leaves or other debris around the unit.

Control sunlight in your home
Help your air conditioner not have to work as hard by controlling the amount of sun and heat that enter your home on a hot day. You can do this by keeping windows, blinds and shades closed. You can also run floor and ceiling fans to better circulate the cool air.

Use an adjustable thermostat
There’s no sense in running your air conditioner full blast all day if you are not home. It’s recommended to have your thermostat set to “AUTO” and “COOL” at about 74° F. Keep in mind that each degree that you are able to raise the thermostat saves you 3 to 5% on your air conditioning costs. Therefore, if having your thermostat set to 74° F costs you $150 a month, raising it to 78° can reduce your bill by $25.

Keep room doors open
Keeping room doors open improves the airflow throughout your house so your air conditioner stays in balance.

Get HVAC maintenance yearly

The best way to make sure your air conditioner runs at maximum efficiency is to have maintenance done at least once a year.  The following tasks should be included: cleaning and inspecting coils; cleaning or replacing filters; adjusting and replacing fan belts; lubricating motors and bearings; cleaning and checking blowers and fans; inspecting controls and safeties; checking refrigerant and pressures; and verifying operating temperatures.

Upgrade your system
Over the years HVAC system designs have improved to provide optimal efficiency and save energy. The Department of Energy states: Depending on where you live,  replacing your old heating and cooling equipment with ENERGY STAR-qualified equipment can cut your annual energy bill by more than $115.

Have your system installed correctly
According to the Department of Energy, nearly half of all HVAC systems are installed incorrectly. Improper installation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30 percent – costing you more on your energy bills and possibly shortening the equipment’s life.
